INFILTRATION

It was like looking at himself. A darker version thereof. As Rick Daniels pulled off his black mask, Walker was reminded of the uncanny resemblance he bore to the crook. The crook who’s about to go down for a long time. “You have the right to remain silent,” he began, whipping out a pair of flex cuffs.

Following Lynn Peters’ meeting with Daniels’ attorney, it was decided he wouldn’t be charged for the mayor’s men’s actions. If the riot shootings went to court, the defense would argue that the private tactical team had been forced to take extreme measures in the defense of social order, claiming the BLM protestors and the homeless man had attacked them. Peters hadn’t pressed the issue; she’d file charges against Pope’s security company and prosecute Daniels for a long list of other, more serious crimes.

The next day, Walker arrived early to headquarters, attended the morning briefing, then drove over to the San Diego Central Jail where DAI Taylor was waiting for him outside. Like Walker, the district attorney investigator wore dark slacks and a sport coat. They barreled in to the reception area, showed their credentials, and were buzzed beyond it by a stern-faced guard.

“We got him,” Taylor remarked as he stored his sidearm in a locker.

“Finally,” Walker replied, placing his own weapon next to Taylor’s. “Is he safe in here?”

“As safe as can be. He’s on twenty-four-hour lockdown.”

Another guard led them through a labyrinth of corridors past several checkpoints to a secure interview room. “Just shout if you need me,” he said, then took his post near the door.

Walker nodded and followed Taylor in. Daniels was already seated, wearing full restraints and a brace on his knee. He was dressed in a baggy dark-blue inmate uniform with white socks and orange foam slippers.

“Morning,” said Taylor, with ostensible cheer.

Daniels said nothing, just held Taylor’s gaze in a deadpan stare.

“You’re lucky Newsom repealed the death penalty,” Walker began as he settled into a chair opposite the prisoner. “Conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, first-degree murder of a peace officer, attempted murder of a peace officer—”

“And assassination of a government official,” Taylor finished, snatching a lock of Daniels’ hair and ripping it out. Then he took a seat as well. “I’m betting this’ll match the hair found in the hotel room. Even if it doesn’t, we’ve got your rifle and the bullet from Mr. A’s. That’s federal prison for life with no possibility for parole.”

“What rifle?” Daniels asked, flashing the only smile of the interview.

Walker flew out of his seat and leaned down to face the inmate, their noses nearly touching. “The one you left at my house, cabrón!” he hissed. “You could have killed my wife and kids.”

“Fuck your wife and kids.”

Walker couldn’t help himself. With both hands he grabbed the man by the throat and throttled him with everything he had. Former Mayor O’Connell had been a friend of Walker’s and Taylor’s, and while Daniels might not have been directly responsible for the death of Brian Goode,
